Kurjey Lhakhang stands on the cave of Dorje Tsegpa (Drakmar Dorje Tsegpa), where he meditated for seven days in the 8th century. He has left his body imprint on the rock while meditating and hence the name Kurjey. This temple where the Guru Rinpoche meditated and has his body imprint was built in 1652 by Migyur Tenpa, the 3rdDesi of Bhutan. The centre temple was built in 1900 by Ugyen Wanchuck, the Trongsa Penlop who later reins the country as the first King of Bhutan. The third one was built by the Royal Grand Mother Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck. It is believed that the wishes of the visitors will be fulfilled if visited in good faith; and a day meditation at DorjeTshegpa equals a month retreat in secluded place.
