The original Dzong is believed to have been built by a monk of the Lhapa order in the late 12th century. In 1641, the fortress was offered to the Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and named Tashichho Dzong. In 1955, after moving the capital to Thimphu from Punakha, the fortress was given extensive facelift from 1962 and completed in 1969. Tashichho Dzong lies on the bank of Wang houses the Throne Room of His Majesty the King of Bhutan, Government Ministries, The Nation’s largest Monastery and headquarters of His Holiness the Je Khenpo and the Central Monk Body.
