Bumthang valley houses some of the ancient and most precious Buddhist sites. The place is blessed by Guru Rinpoche who visited the valley in 8th century upon the invitation of Chakhar Gyalpo (King of Chakhar, also called Sindha Raja, Sindha Gyalpo). The District is sub-divided into four geogs (blocks) of Chhoekhor, Chhume, Tang and Ura.Buckwheat is main crop in this valley, and the higher pastures are used for sheep and yaks herding. The District also has a domestic airport in Bathbalathang.
